Gaza Crisis Appeal

Since the ceasefire took effect in the Gaza Strip, the scale of the devastation and the need for humanitarian aid have become ever more apparent. Entire families have lost everything and require urgent help meeting such basic needs as shelter, food, water and medical care.

According to the UN, more than 50,000 Palestinians are now homeless and 400,000 have no running water. Thousands of buildings have been destroyed or severely damaged. The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) and Palestine Red Crescent Society (PRCS) are currently looking into the humanitarian needs, in particular the rehabilitation of hospitals and medical centres. 

Conditions in Gaza were extremely harsh even prior to this recent conflict due to checkpoint closures and import restrictions over the past 18 months. The 22 days of hostilities killed at least 1,300 Palestinian civilians and injured 5,500. Thirteen Israelis were killed, of which three were civilians.

Essential infrastructure in the Gaza Strip suffered severe damage, with dire consequences for public health. In particular, there is a lack of safe drinking water. Hospitals are overwhelmed and need continued support. The presence of unexploded ordnance is also likely to slow down the economic recovery and reconstruction in the Gaza Strip.

Red Cross and Red Crescent volunteers and staff are on the ground helping the people affected and urgent funds are needed to continue responding to the immense needs and alleviate the suffering from this humanitarian crisis.
